The Infinity and Veracity of God
by Chester A. McCalley
God is Infinite
Definition
All of God's attributes are unlimited.
Explanation
For example, God's love cannot be improved upon; it is infinite in its reach, as are all of God's attributes. God is not limited by time or space. Once again, one searches in vain for an illustration; but since only God is infinite, He is the only example we have. There is no one to whom we may compare Him. However, it is possible to illustrate our time and space limitations. We can live in only one place at a time. We exist only in the present; we cannot live in the past or future.
At the dedication of the temple, Solomon made a statement about the infinite nature of God, saying, "But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain Thee, how much less this house which I have built!"
Paul uses the self-existence and infinity of God to argue against the false deities of Athens, saying, "The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; neither is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all life and breath and all things... (Acts 17:24-25)."
Application
Infinity may be called "an attribute of the attributes." God is
infinite in love, infinite in holiness, infinite in mercy, infinite in
knowledge, etc.
The infinity of God reminds us that comprehension of all He is knows no
limitation. John spoke of comprehending God's grace and says we have received
"grace for grace." The preposition for is called the Greek preposition
of direct exchange. Grace received opens the way for more grace to be received,
and so on-and-on; God is infinite!
God Is Truth
Definition
Everything that God discloses is absolutely certain.
Explanation
The truthfulness of God is asserted by direct statement as in I Thessalonians 5:24, "Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass." I Corinthians 1:9 reminds us that "God is faithful...." Jesus Himself is the embodiment of truth (John 14:6).
God's veracity can also be expressed negatively. Hebrews 6:18 says "it is impossible for God to lie...." Titus 1:2 speaks of God as one "who cannot lie...."
Application
God's veracity is the basis for assurance of forgiveness (I John 1:9).
God's veracity is inseparably linked to God's word (II Corinthians 1:20, Psalm
138:2, Numbers 23:19).
God is the only source of truth (Romans 3:4).
The proper response to God's veracity is faith (Psalm 91:4).
