Then the day was done.
Shadows grew long
And merged swiftly
With receding twilight.
Darkness fell
Heavily and silently,
Like a woolen cloak.
Cats lurking in dark places
Were careful but unafraid.
Night creepers
Began to stir, to stretch
Their sinewy, silken limbs,
To slink amid the shadows,
Shadows themselves.
Crawlers uttered their voices.
Jungle noises:
Cat lapping pondwater --
Big cat.
Chattering birds and apes.
Leathery flappings
Of unseen wings.
Brushing sounds
Like fur,
Or breath.
I hold mine;
Don't you?
