Crucifixion and Jesus Christ- Implications

The Dreaded Capital Punishment- Crucifixion

All four Gospels of Christianity talk about the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. He was crucified on a cross on charges of blasphemy by the Governor of Rome and the Jewish Council. The crucifixion was one of the most brutal incidents in history. It was also one of the defining moments of Christianity because it brought about elements of repentance and sacrifice for the sins of a fellow human. The word ‘crucifixion’ has Latin origins, and it means the act of being fixed on a cross.

The Pains and Torture Brough On Jesus Christ

Flogging
Before Jesus Christ was crucified, he was subjected to a lot of flogging with the use of whips. It is believed that the lashes had sharp sheep’s teeth attached to them. It is also said that iron balls were inserted in the flogging whip to make Jesus Christ suffer unbearably. The bruises caused by this punishment isn’t something that any form of punishment in a civilized world can incorporate. The same is true for capital punishment using crucifixion as the method.

Carrying the cross
Jesus Christ had to take his cross after the barbarian whips flogged him. It is another example of the persistent cruelty that was endured by the Son of God. The cross was heavy and lifting it after being badly hurt must have taken a heavy toll on Jesus Christ’s body. When Jesus Christ was given the offer to drink myrrh, he denied it. Drinking myrrh may have led to a reduction in the ability to feel pain. However, this was not to happen.

The mocking
The time spent by Jesus Christ on the cross is highly debatable. The method of time marking calculation wasn’t accurate. However, it is approximated that the total time was around six hours. During this time, the lawmakers and casual passers made fun of Jesus Christ and made a mockery of his claims and promises. During the later stages of his presence on the cross, total darkness engulfed the city.

The words
While he was on the cross, Jesus Christ questioned God about the reasons because of which He chose to forsake humanity. It might also interest you to know that the four Gospels don’t agree on the incidents during the crucifixion. If you read the Gospels, you will get to know about the varied versions of their story. Good Friday is the commemoration of this crucifixion.
